Mary Mary Quite Contrary [2009]

Mary Mary Quite Contrary examines the complexities which arise when organic gardening movement meets the global marketplace of design, production, and distribution. Framed against an oft-repeated quote that presents the utopia of the organic garden as a worry-free cycle of seed to food to compost to seed, 21 line drawings of organic gardening products are named in recognition of the invisible labor used to produce, manufacture, distribute, or deliver them. These are introduced by a drawing of my own backyard garden.

The installation consists of 22 18"x24" digital prints on bond, creased as if they were instructions accompanying the products, and pinned to the wall in a single line. Fifteen of these appear below.
